SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Lees-McRae's women's cross country team finished second at the 25th annual Eye Opener hosted by University of South Carolina Upstate this Saturday. The Bobcats' second place finish out of 25 teams was impressive as they ran as a pack for the first 1.5 miles of the 3.1 mile race.
"We decided to run as a pack for the first mile and a half to get a feel for the pace, and from there we raced the rest of the course," said Coach Craig McPhail. "I thought we might have been a bit apprehensive, but with a downhill start it is better to be that way. We still had good performances and left with an understanding of what we need to work on."
Leading the way for Lees-McRae was junior Dana Lindholm (Weaverville, N.C.) as she recorded a time of 20:19. She was followed by Gina Valenti (Washington, N.C.) who ran a 20:33. Ashley May (Chilhowie, Va.) and April Harris (Jonesville, N.C.) finished in a time of 20:55 while Kira Shoemaker (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out the Bobcats top five with a time of 21:09.
The Bobcats will rest up and get their training in over the next two weeks as they prepare for The Citadel Invite in Charleston, S.C. on Saturday, September 26th.
