NEW ORLEANS --- The Lees-McRae College women's cross country team is ranked ninth in this week's edition of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings, announced USTFCCCA officials Wednesday.
The Bobcats have performed well so far this season, recording a pair of top-10 team finishes, including a third-place showing at the Lenoir-Rhyne University Invitational on Sep. 10. Lees-McRae has been led this season by a trio of freshmen, as rookie twins Katherine and Emily Shields (Salisbury, N.C.) have paced the Bobcats with impressive performances in each of the team's two meets. Freshman Audrey Garrett (Weaverville, N.C.) has also performed well this season, improving her 5k time by nearly a minute from the first meet en route to a top-10 finish at Lenoir-Rhyne.
Queens University of Charlotte retains the top spot in the region rankings from last season, while King College holds onto second. Mount Olive College vaults to third from the ninth spot in last season's final region rankings, while Anderson University (S.C.) drops one slot to fourth. Augusta State University is fifth, followed by UNC Pembroke, Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate University, Lees-McRae, and Flagler College.
Lees-McRae is set to return to the trails on Saturday, as the Bobcats travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational at Hagan Stone Park.
