Courtney enters his first year as the Director of Esports for Lees-McRae College. He is an Alumni of Lees-McRae College, having graduated in 2016 Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Performing Arts, and is excited to be back on campus continuing the development of LMC Esports. The program was started back in 2012 by current professor Dr. Lonni Wilson and has always been a close-knit community of dedicated students.
“I’m excited to share my knowledge of the Esports industry with students who are interested in competing at the collegiate level," said Courtney. "With Esports being a global sport, students here have the opportunity to compete with schools from all over the country. All while enjoying the beauty of our quiet mountain setting here in Banner Elk, it’s truly a unique combination in the Esports world.”
Courtney is a lifelong gamer and sports fan, and found these passions unite in Esports. He has competed in Rocket League, League of Legends, Overwatch, and Super Smash Bros for many years and consistently finishes within the top 1% of Rocket League players in North America each ranked season. Using his knowledge of gaming to become entrenched within the collegiate esports community he has connections with schools nationwide and is excited to use these opportunities to provide students with a network of resources for staying involved with Esports after graduation.
Throughout his time in college he served as an ambassador for the school and even worked professionally as an admissions counselor this year. He discovered a love for working with students as they plan for the future and is excited to share his experiences with prospective families.
“Lees-McRae was a special place in my own development and I am excited to talk with students as they discover why I fell in love with the high country in the first place!”
He plans for the Esports program to be both a rewarding competitive experience and an inclusive community for students that can serve as a support while they progress in their academic careers.
