Fullerton, CA--Freshman Colin Kelly (Orlando, FL) had a
match-high 27 kills Friday afternoon as the Bobcats, looking to
regain momentum after yesterday's loss, defeated host school Hope
International in Fullerton, CA in five games in men's volleyball
action. The Bobcats improve to 4-11 on the season while the Royals
fall to 4-12.
In the first game of the match the Royals edged out the Bobcats
30-28 hitting .436 with 23 kills to the Bobcats' .400. In game
two the Bobcats took advantage of nine errors and a dismal .156 by
Hope International to grab a 30-23 win, evening the match at one
all. Game three saw the Royals capitalizing on the Bobcats
mistakes to take back the match lead when they outscored the
Bobcats 30-21.
With the match on the line, the Bobcats battled in game four,
using a great team defensive effort to take the game 30-25 despite
having eight errors and only nine kills. With the match tied at
2-2 the Bobcats headed into the final game determined to come out
on top. The game proved to be another tight match between the two
teams, with both teams gaining eight kills, but fewer errors on the
part of the Bobcats propelled them into the winner's circle 15-12.
The win is the third for the Bobcats in the last four matches.
The Bobcats' Colin Kelly once again led the team with 27 kills,
eight digs, and three block assists. Jeremy
Evans (Raleigh, NC) added another ten kills in the effort,
while junior transfer, Ryan
Black (Escondido, CA) slammed 7 kills and added three block
assists in the winning effort. Shane
Holderby (Virginia Beach, VA) had aother solid performance with
48 assists and seven digs.
The Bobcats had a true team defensive effort with five players
dishing up at least five digs apiece and every player finishing the
day with either a dig or a block to his name. Kyle
Gauger (Penfield, NY) had nine digs while both Robert
Ritchie (Hollywood, CA) and Ian
Bryner (Miramar, FL) had five block assists and a block
solo.
Leading the way for the Royals was Alex Figueredo who had 24
kills, six digs, two block solos and two block assists. Danillo
Pereira dished out 59 assists and seven digs.
