ELON, N.C. --- The Elon University men's tennis
team swept Lees-McRae College in non-conference action on Saturday
morning, defeating the Bobcats by a 7-0 tally at the Jimmy Powell
Tennis Center.
Elon's Chase Helpingstine (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Alberto Rojas
(Atlatlahucan, Mexico) posted an 8-0 victory over Alexander Hayes
(Mexico City, Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) to open
doubles play, as Eric Turner (Boone, N.C.) and Thomas Darling
(Canton, Mass.) defeated Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) and
reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week Nandor Solymosi
(Drebecen, Hungary) by an 8-4 tally in the second pairing to give
Elon the doubles point. Lees-McRae's Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and
Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) then
defeated Carlos Abroleda (Cali, Columbia) and Andrew Prince
(Hastings Hudson, N.Y.), 8-4, in the final doubles matchup.
Cameron Silverman (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) opened singles play with
an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win over Solymosi, as Phillip Nemec
(Calgary, Alberta, Canada) defeated VanHoy 6-2, 6-2 to give Elon a
3-0 cushion. Thomas Darling then notched the deciding point for
Elon, defeating Hayes 6-0, 6-4 in the third singles matchup.
Arboleda won his fourth-flight match against Nunes 6-1, 6-0, as
Phillip Meyer (Bern, Switzerland) defeated Jacob Darling (Katikati,
New Zealand) 6-2, 6-2. Prince then wrapped up singles play with a
6-2, 6-2 win over Loveridge.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Wednesday when the Bobcats
travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to take on Carson-Newman College in
an NCAA Division II Southeast Region matchup. Play is scheduled to
begin at 2:30 p.m.
