GAFFNEY, S.C. --- The Lees-McRae College men's
volleyball team cruised to a straight-set victory over Washington
Adventist University on Sunday morning behind a pair of nine-kill
performances from Edmund Walkley (Glenbrook, Australia) and Sam
Sheers (Centerville, Ohio), sweeping the season series with the
Shock with a 25-5, 25-1, 25-7 win on the campus of Limestone
College.
Lees-McRae (9-7) recorded its fourth victory in its last five
matches, including its second straight sweep of Washington
Adventist (1-7), while posting a blistering .518 hitting percentage
and 15 service aces.
The Bobcats held the Shock to a negative hitting percentage in
each set, as Dylan Kembre (West Chester, Ohio) notched match-highs
of 24 assists and seven service aces, while Justin Sandoval
(Secaucus, N.J.) and Josh Cothron (Bradenton, Fla.) each tallied a
trio of aces. Walkley and Sheers each posted a match-high nine
kills as no Bobcat tallied a hitting percentage below .333. Efrain
Negron (Orlando, Fla.) also notched a contest-best 12 digs for the
Bobcats.
Lees-McRae took control early, opening the first set with a 7-0
spurt, which included a trio of aces from Kembre, before stretching
the margin to 19-4 on a kill from Kembre. The Bobcats then closed
out the set with a 6-0 spurt following a kill from the Shocks' Evan
Hall.
The Bobcats nearly came away with a 25-0 victory in the second
set, opening the frame with 24 straight points before the Shock
tallied their first marker of the frame on a Lees-McRae hitting
error. Lees-McRae then closed out the 25-1 second-set win on a
Shock hitting error.
Walkley started the third set for Lees-McRae with back-to-back
kills, propelling the Bobcats on a 14-3 run to open the frame.
Lees-McRae then closed out the sweep with an 11-4 run, tallying the
deciding point of the match on a solo block by Eric Jackson
(Daytona Beach, Fla.).
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Friday, Mar. 4 when the
Bobcats host Eastern Mennonite University at 3 p.m. in Williams
Gymnasium.
