ASHEVILLE, N.C. --- The UNC Asheville men's
tennis team swept doubles play, and registered wins in four of the
six singles en route to a 5-2 win over Lees-McRae College, ranked
No. 22 in the latest Campbell's/ITA NCAA Division II Men's Tennis
Poll, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
UNC Asheville (6-4) swept doubles play to earn the first point
of the afternoon, as Matt Waissen (Basingstoke, Great Britain) and
Jonas Brobeck (Stockholm, Sweden) opened the day with an 8-4
victory over Lees-McRae's (3-5) Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and
Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil).
Nathan White (Hoover, Ala.) and Nicolai Nonnenbroich (Mougins,
France) followed with an 8-5 win against Skylar Warren (Asheville,
N.C.) and Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico), while Thomas Rees
(Worcestershire, Great Britain) and Adrien Langeard (Caen, France)
earned a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) victory over Nandor Solymosi
(Drebecen, Hungary) and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England).
Solymosi answered for the Bobcats in the first singles matchup,
defeating Nonnenbroich 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, (17-15) to even the tally at
1-1. Langeard then defeated VanHoy by scores of 6-0, 6-2 to reclaim
the lead for the Bulldogs, while Waissen knocked off Hayes, 6-0,
6-3, in the third pairing. Nunes countered with a hard-fought win
over Ryan Matthews (Greensboro, N.C.) in the No. 4 matchup, winning
the tilt by scores of 6-7, 6-3, and 10-7.
Brobeck tallied the deciding point for the Bulldogs in the fifth
pairing, defeating Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.), 6-1, 6-1 before
White closed out the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jacob
Darling (Katikati, New Zealand).
Lees-McRae returns to action on Monday when the Bobcats travel
to Mount Olive, N.C. to resume their Conference Carolinas schedule
against Mount Olive College. Play is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
