BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior Ellie Psillas
(Hagerstown, Md.) tallied four goals and two assists to lead the
Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 win over Urbana
University on Tuesday evening on Tate Field.
Lees-McRae (2-1) outshot Urbana (0-2) by a 36-31 margin,
including a 15-12 edge in the second half, while holding a 30-27
advantage in ground balls. The Blue Knights were successful on
18-of-21 clear attempts in the game, while the Bobcats converted
16-of-20 clear attempts.
Olivia Gudewich (Fredrick, Md.) paced the Bobcats with a
season-high five goals while also adding an assist, as Psillas,
Laura Hawthorne (Winter Garden, Fla.), and Lexi King (Woodstock,
Ga.) each tallied four goals. Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.) chipped
in a goal and a game-high three assists, as Hawthorne and King each
added a helper. Taylor Moody (Woodstock, Ga.) played the full 60
minutes for Lees-McRae between the pipes, allowing just six goals
and making 20 saves.
Urbana's Brittany Mazzu (Derby, N.Y.) and Emily Boerger (Milford
Center, Ohio) each tallied two goals for the Blue Knights, as
Ashley Gerken (Laguana Hills, Calif.) and Tiffany Angelo both added
a strike. Allyson LeMasters (Greenwood, Ind.) made nine saves while
playing the full 60 minutes for Urbana.
Lees-McRae opened the game with three goals in the first eight
minutes, including a pair from King, before Urbana answered with
three of its own to even the score at 3-3 on Mazzu's first strike
at the 17:39 mark of the first half.
The Bobcats answered with five straight goals, taking an 8-3
lead on Psillas' second goal of the game with 2:30 left in the
period. The teams each tallied a goal over the final two minutes to
send the contest into the intermission with the score standing at
9-4 in favor of the Bobcats.
After Gudewich opened the scoring in the second half and Boerger
answered for the Blue Knights, the Bobcats netted seven straight
goals to take a commanding 17-5 advantage on three consecutive
scores by Hawthrone, with her third coming at the 9:16 mark. Angelo
tallied the Blue Knight's final goal of the game with 7:32 left on
the clock, as Gudewich capped the day's scoring by converting a
free position shot in the last minute of play to equal the final
margin of 18-6.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Thursday when the Bobcats host
fifth-ranked Le Moyne College at 2 p.m.
