BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Sophomore Jessica
MacConnell (Cary, N.C.) tallied a season-high seven points with
four goals and three assists to lead the Lees-McRae College women's
lacrosse team to a 22-14 win over Erskine College in Conference
Carolinas play on Monday evening.
Lees-McRae (3-9, 1-6 CC) outshot Erskine (1-14, 1-5 CC) by a
37-29 margin, while holding a 50-31 advantage in ground balls and
controlling 20 of 38 draws on the day. Senior Ellie Psillas
(Hagerstown, Md.) led the way with a game-high six goals, while
Guenthner and Gudewich each posted a season-high five goals.
Psillas recorded a double hat trick with six goals, while Emily
Guenthner (Nampa, Idaho) and Olivia Gudewich (Frederick, Md.) each
tallied five goals for the Bobcats. MacConnell, Guenthner and Laura
Hawthorne (Winter Garden, Fla.) each added three helpers, as
Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.) chipped in two goals and two assists.
Taylor Moody (Woodstock, Ga.) tallied 11 saves and seven caused
turnovers, while Guenthner also added a game-high 14 ground
balls.
Savannah Nunn paced the Flying Fleet with five goals, as Alesia
Jerrells posted four goals and one assist. Anna Dailey also added
two goals, while Kaitlyn Overley posted 12 saves between the pipes.
Dailey and Nunn chipped in six and five ground balls,
respectively.
The Bobcats led wire-to-wire, opening the game with six straight
goals, including back-to-back MacConnell strikes to claim an early
6-0 advantage at the 24:29 mark. After Jerrells put the Fleet on
the board with her first of the game, MacConnell completed her hat
trick by making a well-timed run into space, and redirecting a
perfect pass by Guenthner into the back of the net to give the
Bobcats a 7-1 lead.
Erskine answered with two quick goals, cutting the margin to 7-3
before the Bobcats responded with three straight strikes to push
the lead to 10-3 on Guenthner's second of the game at the 11:44
mark. The Fleet countered with four consecutive goals in less than
two minutes to cut the margin to 10-7, capping the scoring for the
first half on Lauren Burdick's strike at the 7:17 mark.
Gudewich answered for the Bobcats just 10 seconds into the
second half, finishing off a pass from MacConnell after the Cary,
N.C. native corralled the ball after the draw and fed the streaking
Gudewich to push the lead to 11-7. Erskine began to rally, scoring
four of the next five goals to cut the lead to 12-11 on Nunn's
fourth of the game at the 20:41 mark.
The Bobcats answered with four straight goals, widening the lead
to 16-11 on Psillas' fourth of the contest with 14:47 to play.
Lees-McRae held on from there, countering a strike from Jerrells
with another four-goal spurt to put the game out of reach on
Guenthner's fourth of the game that pushed the lead to 20-12 with
3:35 left on the clock. Psillas and Guenthner would add a pair of
late goals to counter two Erskine strikes, equaling the final
margin of 22-14.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when the
Bobcats host Liberty University to conclude their 2011 schedule.
Play is slated to begin at 2 p.m. following senior day festivities
at Tate Field.
