BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The No. 40 Limestone
College men's tennis team swept doubles play and held off a late
surge in singles action by No. 22 Lees-McRae College to edge the
Bobcats by a 5-4 margin in Conference Carolinas play on Sunday
afternoon.
Limestone's (14-4, 7-0 CC) Miguel Lopez Zuniga and Jordan Vicain
opened the match with an 8-4 victory over Lees-McRae's (6-7, 5-1
CC) duo of Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) and Skylar Warren
(Asheville, N.C.), before Mike Stephenson and Rafael Ferla defeated
Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis,
Santa Catarina, Brazil) by a score of 8-5. Abraham Lascari Diaz and
Daniel Lopez then knocked off Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary)
and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) by a tally of 8-5.
Solymosi started the comeback bid in the first singles flight,
storming back to defeat Zuniga in a three-set thriller by scores of
3-6, 7-6 (7-2), and 6-1. VanHoy then cut the margin to 3-2 with a
7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over Stephenson before Ferla pushed the Bobcats
to the brink with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory against Hayes. Nunes
answered with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Vicain, before Diaz ground out a
tough 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) to
give the Saints the deciding point. Loveridge then rounded out the
day with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory against Lopez.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Wednesday when the Bobcats
host Queens University of Charlotte in a 4 p.m. conference
matchup.
