BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Florida Southern
College women's lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a
17-2 margin in the first half en route to a 24-2 victory in
non-conference play on Tuesday evening on Tate Field.
Florida Southern (3-0) outshot Lees-McRae (0-4) by a spread of
36-5 in the contest, including a 21-3 advantage in the first half,
as the Mocs converted each of their 15 clear attempts. The Mocs
edged the Bobcats by a 21-17 margin in ground balls, while
controlling 20 of the 28 draws on the night.
Olivia Gudewich (Frederick, Md.) and Nicole Dupont (Fort Myers,
Fla.) each found the back of the net for the Bobcats, as Katelin
Rooney (Naples, Fla.) tallied two assists. Rooney controlled six
draws and posted two ground balls, as Dupont and Jessica MacConnell
(Cary, N.C.) tallied four and three ground balls, respectively.
Jessica Travers (Asheville, N.C.) made nine saves between the pipes
for the Bobcats.
Lorianne Hoover paced the Mocs with four goals and one assist,
as Katie Ferree, Megan Asper, and Kiani Carroll each posted a hat
trick. Caitlin Chase and Mara Mason recorded three and two assists,
respectively, as Asper controlled a game-high seven draws. Mason,
Carroll, and Meghan Colucci each posted three ground balls for the
Mocs. Katie Hammerer and Lindsay Holdway combined for three saves
between the pipes.
Florida Southern jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game's first 11
minutes before Lees-McRae answered, as Rooney found Gudewich for
the sophomore's first goal of the season. The Mocs would counter
with a pair of strikes before Dupont responded with her first tally
of the campaign at the 17:52 mark of the first half.
Florida Southern continued to dictate play with six goals in the
final 10 minutes of the period, stretching the lead to 17-2 heading
into the intermission. The Mocs added seven tallies in the second
half to equal the final margin.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday, March 3 when the
Bobcats travel to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine College in
Conference Carolinas play at 2 p.m.
