MISENHEIMER, N.C. --- The Pfeiffer University
men's volleyball team held on for a four-set victory over
Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon, taking the first two sets
and recording 10 blocks in Conference Carolinas play.
Pfeiffer (18-6, 8-1 CC) won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-23,
23-25, and 25-16, posting a .264 hitting percentage while holding
Lees-McRae (10-8, 4-4 CC) to a .122 clip on the attack. The Falcons
posted 53 kills, 40 digs and 10 blocks, while Lees-McRae recorded
49 smashes, dug out 45 attacks, and notched seven stuffs.
Jose Ribas (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) led the way for Lees-McRae
with a match-high 18 kills, while John Lucas (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Chris Flood (Louisville, Ky.) added eight and seven smashes,
respectively. Lucas chipped in a match-high 11 digs, as Randy
Ramirez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) nearly posted a double-double with
45 assists and nine digs.
Quentin Moore and Caleb Brophy paced the Falcons with 16 kills
each, as David Frazee added nine smashes. David Specian nearly
posted a double-double with 43 assists and nine digs, as Moore dug
out nine attacks and Frazee added a match-high seven block
assists.
The early moments of the first set proved to be a tightly
contested affair, until Pfeiffer launched a 7-0 run to take an
18-11 lead on a kill by Michael McLaughlin. Lees-McRae would close
the gap to 18-15 before Pfeiffer responded, holding on for a 25-21
victory following a Frazee kill.
The teams battled to a 10-10 deadlock early in the second frame,
before Pfeiffer went on a 6-2 run to take a 16-12 lead on a Brophy
kill. Lees-McRae would answer with a 9-5 run, evening the tally at
21-21 on a kill by Flood before the Falcons closed out the set with
a 4-2 spurt that was capped by a Frazee smash.
Lees-McRae battled back in the third set, opening a 13-9
advantage on a Ramirez kill before pushing the margin to 19-14
following a Flood smash. Pfeiffer would rally with a 4-0 spurt,
trimming the lead to 19-18 on a Bobcat error. After Lees-McRae
answered with a 3-0 run to take a 22-18 lead, Pfeiffer countered
with a 5-0 surge to claim a 23-22 advantage following a block by
Frazee and Moore. The Bobcats then responded with three straight
points, taking the set with a 25-23 win following blocks by Ramirez
and Joshua Jones (Christmas, Fla.), and Jones and Ribas.
Pfeiffer responded in the fourth frame, opening the set with a
7-3 run before pushing the margin to 14-7 on a block by Frazee and
Micah Bortner. The Falcons would stretch the lead to 19-11
following a Bobcat miscue, before pushing Lees-McRae to match point
at 24-15 on back-to-back attacking miss-hits by the Bobcats.
Pfeiffer then closed out the set and the match on a kill by
Moore.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats
travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone College in conference
play at 7 p.m.
