BANNER ELK, N.C – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team picked up their first win of the year by defeating Tusculum University on Tuesday night (25-22, 26-24, 25-18, 25-19). Drew Sims led the way for the Bobcats with twelve kills and six digs.
1st Set - The Bobcats began the game strong, jumping out to a five to two lead over the Pioneers. Tusculum was able to quickly pull even at seven and from there on, the set was extremely tight. Lees-McRae held the lead as late as 20-19 before dropping the final three points and the set to go down zero to one.
2nd Set - Lees-McRae and Tusculum were again in a tight affair in the second set. The Bobcats pulled ahead by one on a big kill from Drew Sims to make the score 18-17. Lees-McRae was able to use this momentum and continue to lead the set. At 25-24, Tusculum took a timeout to regroup. The Bobcats came out of the break and, off a Bradley Peters kill, quickly handled the Pioneers to tie the game at one to one.
3rd Set - Unlike the previous sets, the Bobcats were able to gain an early lead in the third and maintain that advantage throughout. Errors also plagued the Pioneers in the set as after an Ethan Gardner kill, it was a Tusculum service error that won the set for the Bobcats 25-18.
4th Set - In what finished as the deciding set, the Bobcats again gained the lead around the midway point at 11-5. The Pioneers were able to climb back into the contest however Lees-McRae again pulled away, going on to win the set and the match.
Next Up – Lees-McRae will return to action this Saturday when they host Limestone College. First serve from Banner Elk is set for 7 p.m.
