BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Erskine College at home on Friday night (25-19, 26-24, 26-24).
1st Set - Both sides traded points back and forth in the early going of the set. After an Ethan Gardner kill, Lees-McRae was able to gain a one point advantage with the score, nine to eight. This proved however to be a turning point for Erskine as they rallied to score the next five points and go on to win the set, 25-19.
2nd Set - unlike the first, the second set was tight till the very end. An Erskine service error late in the frame gave the Bobcats a 22-21 lead. After two Erskine points, Ace Backer provided Lees-McRae with a thunderous kill to tie the score at 23. The Flying Fleet were able to respond, winning the next two points and the set, 25-23.
3rd Set - In what proved to be the final set, the story unfolded very similar to the second. The Bobcats stayed close throughout but trailed, 24-21. Lees-McRae mounted a push that was capped off by an Ethan Gardner and Bradley Peters block that tied the score at 24 and got the crowd back in the game. Ultimately, a Bobcat attack error would be how it finished and Erskine went on to win, 26-24.
Next Up – Lees-McRae will return to action tomorrow when they face Emmanuel at home. First serve from Banner Elk is set for 3 p.m.
