The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats soccer team ended their 2005
season with a 2-1 win at Tate Field against the visiting St.
Andrew's College Knights.
The game was the first in a doubleheader with the men's teams
from each school, while seniors Dottie Brown (Houston, TX) and
Meghan Bofenkamp (Sioux Falls, SD) were also honored before the
game. The win leaves the Lady Bobcats with a 3-12-2 record in
Coach Renee Lopez' first year at the helm of the young team. Seven
of those losses were by one goal. With the young team earning
their stripes this year, next year's squad will have the experience
of this '05 season and look to be on the winning side of those one
goal games.
Bofenkamp got the Lees-McRae on the board first in the 33rd
minute with a bullet shot from just outside the 18 yard box and
into the top corner, while Freshman Brittney Sherrill
(Winston-Salem, NC) drew an assist on the play. Bofenkamp started
in 67 of 72 career games for the green and gold, and was voted as
team captain by her teammates in both her junior and senior
seasons. She finished her career with 11 goals off of 90 shots
while also contributing 17 assists from the centre and outside
midfield positions. Freshman Christine Calvert (Dallas, TX) added
to the lead with a goal 10 minutes later on an assist from fellow
classmate Megan Shaw (Garland, TX). Calvert took the pass from
Shaw and beat the Knights keeper between the legs.
St. Andrew's continued to battle and broke redshirt junior
goalkeeper Anita Hekman's (Toronto, Ontario) shutout in the 65th
minute with an unassisted goal by Brittany Forest.
Along with Bofenkamp, classmate Dottie Brown was honored prior
to the game. Brown has also been a significant contributor in her
time in green and gold starting 70 of 72 career games as a
defender. Brown's quickness and lead by example demeanor usually
meant that she would mark the opposition's top scoring threat. She
will be sorely missed in the Lady Bobcat backfield as well as in
the locker room.
The Lady Bobcats soccer program and the Lees-McRae College
Athletic Department would like to wish Dottie and Meghan the best
of luck with their future endeavors.
