The Lees-McRae College Bobcats basketball team battled Pfeiffer
University in the Championship game of the Bobby Lutz Invitational
Saturday afternoon, falling to the tournament host Falcons 88-75.
The loss evens the Bobcats record at 2-2 while the Falcons improve
to 4-0.
The teams battled back and forth in the first half, both hungry
to win the holiday weekend tournament. With the score tied at ten
just over five minutes into the game, the Bobcats broke away with
10-2 run to lead 20-12. Their lead would increase before the home
side would cut the score to 28-24 with 8:02 to play with a 12-0 run
of their own. The teams would trade buckets, with the Falcons
tying the game to send the teams into halftime knotted at 40. Both
teams counted nine turnovers in the first half.
With the Bobcats leading by one, 43-42, the Falcons raced out to
a 10- run to take a stranglehold of the game early in the second
half. After Tavares Cooper hit 2 free throws with 12:41 left, the
Falcons had a 60-49 advantage. The Bobcats would battle back but
the deficit was too great as the Falcons led by double digits for
the remainder of the contest.
Pfeiffer shot 86% from the free throw line in the second half to
secure the win. Pfeiffer out rebounded the Bobcats 31-27. The
Falcons also won the battle from the free throw line making 16
more, 34-18.
DeMario Grier led the Falcons with 26 points, while Aaron Dugger
(pictured left), paced the Bobcats with 23. Grier was named
Tournament MVP and was joined on the All Tournament Team by
teammates Cooper and Logan Call. Dugger and Henry Williams
represented the Bobcats on the All Tournament Team while ReShaun
Reeves from King College was also named.
The Bobcats will get back on the court Monday November 25, 2006
when they host Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference foe Mount
Olive College. Tip off at Williams Gymnasium is scheduled for
7:00pm.
