The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats soccer team improved to 5-4,
(2-1 CVAC) with a 2-0 Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference
victory over Coker College Saturday afternoon.
Maribeth Novak put the home side on the board with a shot
from the top of the 18 yard box that beat Lady Cobras keeper
Krystal Samayoa in the 29th minute. The Lady Bobcats took the 1-0
lead into halftime. Both teams created opportunities in the second
half, but nothing materialized as Samayoa and Lady Bobcats keeper
Anita Hekman kept the score tied at one. In the 83rd minute, Jenna
Simpson (pictured) added some insurance for the Lady Bobcats after
she beat her defender one on one from the corner and buried a shot
into the far corner.
"We were really excited to get this CVAC win, especially
since we were missing a few of our regular starters due to injury.
We played our system well for most of the game and took advantage
of our scoring opportunities. It was exciting to see some of our
younger players step up in roles they previously have not been in,
especially in the back line."
Hekman made five saves for her fouth shutout of the
season.
The LadyBobcats will resume CVAC play Tuesday at Anderson
University.
