MOUNT OLIVE, NC--The Lees-McRae Bobcats soccer team extended its
winning streak to nine games, topping Conference Carolinas foe
Mount Olive 5-1 Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats, ranked number two
in the nation, clinched the Conference Carolinas Regular Season
Championship with an 8-1 record, 14-1-1 overall. The loss drops
Mount Olive to 6-11 (1-7 Conference Carolinas).
Conference Carolinas leading goal scorer Lee Squires (Sheffield,
England) opened the scoring early for the nationally ranked
Bobcats, burying his 16th of the season in the game's sixth minute,
with Gary Challinor (Worksop, England) drawing the assist. Matt
Lacey (Norwich, England) increased the Bobcats lead to two just
over ten minutes later with an unassisted tally before setting up
Squires in the 38th minute to give the Bobcats a comfortable 3-0
cushion heading into half time.
The Bobcats would continue to apply pressure on the attack in
the second, capitalizing just over three minutes into play as a
Challinor found the back of the net for his second collegiate
goal. Conference Carolinas overall points leader Berin Boracic
(Orlando, FL) added another insurance goal for the Bobcats in the
56th minute on a penalty kick before the Trojans Sean Keener would
spoil the shutout bid of Bobcats keeper Sean Paradise (North Point,
FL) in the 75th minute.
"At the beginning of the season we set team goals for
ourselves. The guys have worked hard all year, clinching the
regular season title is something that we can all take pride in,"
continued Whalley. "However we've only achieved one goal, and we
cannot be complacent. We still have a long, hard road ahead and
much work to do in order for us to accomplish our other goals."
The Bobcats will battle Belmont Abbey Wednesday night at Tate
Field. Prior to kickoff, set for 6:30pm, the Bobcats will honor
seniors Nate Wall (Des Moines, IA), Kiko Magana (Hutchinson, KS),
Diego Cordeiro (Orlando, FL) and Andre Melkonyan (Charlotte,
NC).
