Samantha Stewart threw a 10-strikeout shutout in the first game
of Saturday's doubleheader, as host St. Andrews Presbyterian
College swept Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference foe Lees-McRae
College by 2-0 and 10-4 scores on Saturday.
The Lady Knights, who hold a 2-10 overall record and a 2-2 slate
in the CVAC, picked up their first two wins of the year while the
Lady Bobcats fell to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the CVAC.
Two runs were all Stewart needed as the Knights posted their
first shutout of the season. Brianna Shurtleff started a two-out,
first inning rally with a walk and a stolen base. Devane Rushing
drove in Shurtleff with a single to right.
Nicole Easter drove in an insurance run for the Lady Knights in
the second with a double to left that plated Kailee Munden, who led
off with a single.
St. Andrews jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap with six
runs in the second inning. Two errors by the Lady Bobcats helped to
keep the inning alive for the home side as they continued to cross
home plate.
Lees-McRae pulled to within four, 6-2, with a two-run third but
SAPC answered with four more runs in the bottom half of the
inning. Shurtleff capped the rally with a two-run double to
center.
The Bobcats scored a lone run in the fourth and freshman Paula
Fryar, (pictured top left), added a home run in the seventh but the
damage had been done and the Lady Knights coasted to victory.
Amanda Dodson led the Lady Bobcats with three hits while Melody
Williams, Salle Horner, Dakota Beck, and Jessica Kinsey added one
hit each in game two.
Sophomore Brittni York earned the win in relief of freshman
starter Lauren James. York had three strikeouts over the final 3
2/3 innings while James had one K.
The Lady Bobcats will return to action Tuesday afternoon when
they continue CVAC play with a doubleheader at Belmont Abbey.
