The Lees-McRae College Bobcats hosted Belmont Abbey in
Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action
Saturday evening, falling 18-7 to the Crusaders. The Bobcats fall
to 0-10, (0-3 CVAC) while the Abbey moves to 4-7, (2-3 CVAC).
Tyler Stieber opened the scoring for the home side after Neil
Sleight found him open across the crease at 11:27. The Crusaders
would storm back to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second
quarter, scoring all three goals in the final 3:30 of the first.
The Crusaders would extend their lead to5-1 before Stieber would
bury a man up tally for the Bobcats to cut the deficit to three.
Abbey would go on a 4-0 run to take hold of the game before Matt
Markey would score his second of the year for the Bobcats. A late
defensive lapse by the Bobcats would allow the Crusaders to pour
salt in the wound, taking a 10-3 lead into halftime with a goal by
James Regan and just two seconds on the clock.
The Bobcats rallied at the halftime to come out flying as
Stieber and Jason Grau found the back of the net. Abbey would
respond with two goals twenty seconds apart half a minute later to
restore their seven goal cushion. The Crusaders would continue to
quickly answer each Bobcats goal throughout the half, cruising to
the win and clinching the 4th seed in the CVAC Tournament.
CJ Robinson led the Abbey attack with four goals, three of which
were scored on the man up, and a pair of assists. Mike O'Malley
matched Robinson with four goals of his own while Evan Young and
Regan each picked up hat tricks. Ryan Matthes buried a pair for
the Crusaders while Jim Ring and John Fuggit registered
singles.
Stieber, (pictured top left), led the Bobcats with a hat trick
while Markey, Grau and Sleight each finished with a goal and an
assist. Kyle Ficken extended his goal scoring streak to four games
chipping in with a single and Kirk picked up his team high ninth
and tenth assists of the season.
The Bobcats will be back in action Wednesday afternoon hosting
Wheeling Jesuit University at Tate Field. Game time is set for
3:00pm.
