The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats hosted Queens University of
Charlotte Sunday afternoon in Carolinas-Virginia Athletic
Conference action, falling 14-8 to the Lady Royals. Queens
improves to 10-6, (6-4 CVAC) while the Lady Bobcats fall to 1-14,
(0-9 CVAC).
The Lady Royals raced out to a 5-0 lead before Laura Hawthorne
put the home side on the board with an unassisted goal at 17:42.
The teams remained scoreless for the next seven minutes before
Queens put together another 5-0 run to grab control of the contest
with 5:33 to play. Seniors Brittany Dabkowski and Marjie Lesser
got a pair back for the Lady Bobcats, however Queen's responded
with one more with just 0:19 to play in the half, sending the
Royals into halftime with an 11-3 lead.
Lees-McRae would score the first goal in the second half as
Clair Shaw would bury a free position attempt at 24:18. After
exchanging goals, the Lady Bobcats clawed their way back into the
game with three straight goals from Lesser, Dabkowski, (pictured
top right), and Julia Campbell and 6:36 to play. Unfortunately,
the damage had been done and Queens added one more for
insurance.
Christina Anderson led the Lady Royals with a game high four
goals and an assist. Brittany Weller, Kelley Duffey and Kelly
Wrightson all added a pair of goals while Amanda Mahle, Shannon
Janney and Carolyn Parsons all added singles. Duffey also picked
up a pair of assists for the Lady Royals.
Dabkowski led the way for the Lady Bobcats scoring two and
setting up two others. Hawthorne scored twice and chipped in an
assist while Shaw also buried a pair. Lesser and Campbell rounded
out the Lees-McRae scoring with singles.
Prior to the game, the senior pair of Dabkowski and Lesser were
honored for their four year contribution to the Lady Bobcats
program. With at least two more games in their careers, each will
be leaving with their names in the record books. Dabkowski
currently holds the all time assists record (41) as well as the all
time total points record (114). Her 73 career goals also rank
second. Lesser, (pictured bottom left), owns the school's all time
ground balls record (105) while ranking third in goals (53), and
total points (89), and third in goals scored (53). This season,
Lesser currently ranks 24th in the nation in caused turnovers per
game averaging 1.5, as well as 26th in draw controls per game,
averaging 2.5.
Dabkowski, Lesser and their Lady Bobcats teammates will close
out their regular season Wednesday afternoon hosting St. Andrew's
Presbyterian College at 4:00pm.
