BANNER ELK, NC - The #18 Lees-McRae Bobcats soccer team defeated
Queens University of Charlotte Royals 1-0 Monday evening in
Conference Carolinas action at Tate Field. The Bobcats improve to
8-1-1 (4-1 Conference Carolinas). The Royals fall to 4-3-3
(2-1-2).
Sophomore Dale Parker (Worksop, England) would scrore his first
of the season in the 29th minute for the game's only goal.
Freshman Tom Brailsford (Rotherham, England) sent a perfect service
into the 18 yard box off a corner kick, allowing Parker to make the
running header count, beating Royals keeper Dan Williams for his
second career goal and first game winner.
"We passed the ball very well and were very resilient showing a
great deal of character tonight," commented Head Coach Chris
Whalley. "In the balance of play, we deserved to win this game.
It was very rewarding to see Dale capitalize on a set piece that
we've been working on in practice. We're playing well, but there
is certainly room for improvement. We need to be fully prepared
for Coker this weekend."
The Bobcats win over the defending conference, region and NCAA
Elite Eight team from a year ago is the first over the Royals in
regular season play in seven years. The Bobcats outshot the Royals
17-12 in the contest.
Five yellow cards, three to the Bobcats, as well as one red to
Lees-McRae midfielder Matt Lacey (Norwich, England) were
assessed.
Williams picked up ten saves for the Royals while Bobcats keeper
(North Point, FL) was credited with eight, earning his third
consecutive shutout, and fourth in five games. Paradise leads
Conference Carolinas in shutouts with five as well as goals against
average (0.64).
The Bobcats will resume Conference Carolinas play this weekend
traveling to Coker College Saturday. Kickoff is set for
5:00pm.
