BANNER ELK, N.C. - The fourth seed Lees-McRae College Lady
Bobcats were upset by the fifth seed Mount Olive College Trojans
3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 20-25) Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round
of the Conference Carolinas Tournament in Williams Gymnasium.
The Lady Bobcats fell behind in set one and went on to lose the set
22-25. In set two, after falling behind early again, the Lady
Bobcats clawed back to tie the game at 23, but the Trojans clinched
the game with two straight points for the 23-25 win. In set three
the Lady Bobcats mounted a comeback to close the gap to 19-18, but
the Trojans again pulled away for the third set win, 20-25,
clinching a berth in the semifinals.
Freshman Lauren Hall (Enka, N.C.) led the Lady Bobcats with nine
kills, and senior Natalie Burns (Orlando, Fla.), playing in her
last match as a Bobcat, tallied eight kills. Junior setters, Trisha
Reese (Hanover, Penn.) and Lauren Dickover (Las Vegas, Nev.),
handed out 16 and 14 assists respectively. Sophomore Kell Bodgan
(Leawood, Kan.) picked up 12 digs on defense.
For the Trojans, Racey Bartley had 13 kills, and Alicia Mote had 12
kills. Bartley also recorded three total blocks. Joanie Werling
passed out 28 assists, and Mallory Peavler recorded a match high 14
digs.
With the loss Lees-McRae's season ends with a record of 17-15
overall and 14-6 in the conference. Their streak of 10 consecutive
conference tournament championships ends, as well. Mount Olive
improves to 18-16 overall and 13-7 in the conference, and they
advance to play number one seed Pfeiffer in the semifinal round
Friday, November 14th at 1 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
