BANNER ELK, N.C. - Despite freshman Kyle Boardman's first career
double-double, 21 points and 10 rebounds, the Lees-McRae Bobcats
men's basketball team (0-4) lost a heartbreaker to the
Carson-Newman College Eagles (1-1) 99-93 in a non-conference game
Tuesday in Williams Gymnasium.
The Bobcats had a 24-18 lead just under the 12 minute mark in the
first half, but the Eagles went on a 9-3 run to tie the game at 27
with just under ten minutes to play in the half. With the game
tied at 27, the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run to give them the largest
lead of the game. The squad carried a 49-46 lead into the
lockerrooms at halftime.
The Bobcats shot 47 percent from the field in the first half
compared to the Eagles 41 percent. The Bobcats also outshot the
Eagles from behind the three-point line making 7-15, 46 percent,
while the Eagles shot a dismal 3-15, 20 percent, from behind the
arc.
But, in the second half the Eagles took their first lead since the
14-minute mark in the first half with a 53-51 lead with just under
18 minutes left in the game. The two teams traded the lead 14
times and had seven ties before the final tie at 93 with one minute
remaining. The Eagles forced two Bobcat turnovers and had six
points in the final minute to earn the win.
"We had a lot of guys make really good plays tonight. We're
excited about the how this team is coming together, but we need to
work on making plays to seal the victory," head coach Scott
Polsgrove said.
The Bobcats shot 46 percent in the second half from the floor
and 33 percent from behind the arc, while the Eagles shot 56
percent from the floor and 75 percent from behind the arc down the
stretch.
Boardman's (Clemmons, N.C.) 21 points and 10 rebounds was a game
high to lead the Bobcats. Sam Youse (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a
career-high day with 19 points and three steals. Nick DeSchepper
(Fishers, Ind.), and Aaron Willey (Kingsport, Tenn.) also scored in
double figures with 17 and 13 points respectively.
The Eagles had six double figure scorers on the night. Tray Okoth
led the way with 18 points. Kevin Hare and Jordan Dixon had 13
points apiece, and Jesse McMurray and Joey Cameron finished with 12
points each. Darron Maxtion had 10 points for the Eagles.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back from the loss when they take
on Brevard College Thursday, November 20th at 7 p.m. in Williams
Gymnasium in another non-conference game.
