NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lees-McRae College Bobcats (0-7) men's
basketball team fell to Newberry College (6-0) 66-55 in a
non-conference game Tuesday night.
Lees-McRae was led by Aaron Woodacre (Piney Flats, Tenn.) who had
20 points and collected six rebounds. Woodacre was the only Bobcat
in double figures.
Brett Goodwell led Newberry in scoring 14 points and grabbing 10
rebounds. Goodwell tied for the team lead in scoring, as he,
Clemente Martin and Grant Domsic each scored 14 points.
After a series of five straight wins to start the season where they
trailed for less than a total of three minutes, the scarlet and
gray found themselves in a battle throughout the first half.
Lees-McRae took the first lead of the game almost immediately after
the opening tip when Aaron Willey (Kingsport, Tenn.) threw down a
dunk on an assist from Nick DeSchepper (Fishers, Ind.).
Newberry answered back, as the two sides traded buckets until a
small NC run was capped by a Domsic triple to put the hosts up 14-8
with 14:20 left until the half. The visitors cut the lead to three,
but Newberry took its largest lead of the opening stanza at the
11:43 mark, when Goodwell's layup gave Newberry a 21-13 lead.
Newberry would only score five more points until the break. The
Bobcats went on a 15-0 run to flip the margin to seven points with
just over three minutes left. A three-point play from Johnson and a
Goodwell layup made the halftime margin 28-26 in Lees-McRae's
favor; the first time Newberry trailed at the break this
season.
After allowing a Kyle Boardman (Clemmons, N.C.) layup to put LMC up
30-26, Newberry cut down on the offensive mistakes to begin to pull
away. A Goodwell dunk followed by Vytautas Valiulis' steal and
breakaway layup tied the game at 30-all with 16:39 to go.
Newberry immediately pushed the lead to five, but the guests
answered back with a 7-0 run highlighted by a three-pointer from
Sam Youse (Winston-Salem, N.C.) that put Lees-McRae up 39-37.
Domsic immediately responded with one of his four threes, and
Newberry wouldn't trail again.
From a 42-42 tie with 8:43 to play, Newberry outscored the Bobcats
24-13 and allowed only three field goals, all of which came from
behind the arc. After shooting 50 percent from the floor in the
first half, the host managed to improve upon that by shooting 55.6%
(15-of-27) from the floor in the second half.
Newberry shot a total of 53.1% (26-of-49) from the floor on the
night, while the Bobcats shot 32.2% (19-of-59) on the night.
The Bobcats' next game is Saturday, December 6th at 2 p.m. against
Chowan in Williams Gymnasium.
