Harrisonburg, VA--In the first match of the day for the
Lees-McRae men's volleyball team in Harrisonburg, VA the Bobcats
defeated Stevens Institute of Technology in a five game battle.
The win was the the first of the season for the youthful Bobcats
who stand at 1-6 while the loss puts Stevens at 6-6.
The match between the Bobcats and the Ducks proved to be a
battle for every point with none of the five games being won by
more than a three point margin. In the first game it was
Lees-McRae, with seventeen kills, who took the 30-27 win. In game
two it was the Ducks hitting .245 over the Bobcats .205 who snuck
out the 30-28 win to tie the match.
Games three and four provided much of the same with LMC taking
the third game 30-28 and the Ducks answering back with their own
30-28 win in game four to take the match to a fifth and final
game. The Bobcats clawed their way to the front, finishing the
match with a 15-12 victory.
The Bobcats (1-6) were led by freshman outside hitter Colin
Kelly (Orlando, Fla.), who registered 28 kills, two aces and a pair
of blocks. Freshman outside hitter Shane Holderby (Virginia Beach,
Va.) notched 20 kills and one block, while freshman setter Juan
Ramirez (Miami Fla.) led in assists and digs, with 60 and 21,
respectively.
Junior outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio posted 13 kills, one
service ace and one block for the Ducks. Sophomore outside hitter
Jonathan Landis finished with 11 kills and a pair of blocks.
Freshmen setters Brandt Grobeis and Aaron Ostrovsky combined for 53
assists as Grobeis tallied 42 and Ostrovsky dished for 11. Junior
libero Michael Ozols led the Ducks defensively as he recorded a
season-high 21 digs.
The Bobcats will face Eastern Mennonite At 4:00pm this afternoon
for their second match of the day.
