Banner Elk, NC--In a Friday afternoon doubleheader the
Lees-McRae women's softball team improved their record to 8-2 after
splitting with visiting Milligan College. In the first game the
Lady Bobcats answered back after the Lady Buffs homered in the
first inning with two runs of their own in the third, holding on
for a 2-1 victory. The Lady Buffs got hot in the second game,
defeating LMC 9-2 to gain their first win of the young season,
putting their record at 1-3 after today's games.
In the first game of the afternoon Head Coach Julie Kennedy
called upon Amanda
Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC) who pitched another tremendous game
for the Lady Bobcats, striking out eight batters in seven innings
and giving up only three hits in the winning effort. Defensively
with Lady Bobcats stepped it up a notch in this game, helping out
with nine groundouts and four flyouts while committing no
errors.
In the batter's box, LMC got eight hits, three coming from
junior captain Salle'
Horner who also added stolen base in the game. The Lady
Bobcats were able to convert four hits into two runs in the third
inning after Horner led off with a single, followed by another
single by second baseman Meagan
Knowles (West Palm Beach, FL). The Lady Buffs managed to get
two Lady Bobcats out before sophomore third baseman Paula
Fryar (Clinton, NC) hit yet another single putting Knowles
across the plate for the first run. Freshman Paige
Coleman (Thomasville, NC) followed the score with a double,
gaining a RBI when Anna
Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC) scored from second base in what would
be the winning run of the game.
Out on the mound for the second game was freshman Magen
West (Whitney, TX) who had a shut going until the fifth inning
when the Lady Buffs took advantage of the unseasoned pitcher,
scoring six runs on four hits. West handed the ball over to relief
pitcher Lauren
Gisler (Peachtee City, GA) in the seventh inning after facing
four batters and giving up two runs. Gisler, coming in with two on
base and no outs, gave up no runs to finish the game with a great
relief performance.
The only scores for the Lady Bobcats came in the second inning
when catcher Paige Coleman, who was walked, and Conference
Carolinas Player of the Week center fielder Megan
Davis (Alexis, NC), who had singled, both scored on a hit by
short stop Salle' Horner.
