CHARLOTTE, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats battled the
Mercyhurst Lakers in non-conference women's lacrosse action Friday
afternoon, falling 25-5 to the nationally ranked Lakers to drop to
0-3 (0-2 Conference Carolinas) this season. The contest against
the Lakers, ranked tenth in the nation was played at a neutral
site, Queen's University of Charlotte Athletic Complex.
The Lady Bobcats were in for a tough game dealing with the
Lakers' Breanna Haggerty, an All-American candidate who was named a
Player to Watch for the Tewaaraton Trophy, (equivalent to the
Heisman Trophy for men's and women's college lacrosse), earlier
this week. Haggerty lived up to her billing burying six goals and
adding a pair of assists.
Page Christensen was also good for six goals while Jessie Horeth
added three goals and two assists and Kristen Toomey posted two
goals and three assists. Celeste Shefferly, Ashley Dulaney,
Kimberly Masterton, and Maria Rosettie rounded out the scoring for
the Lakers who open the season 1-0.
After Horeth put Mercyhurst on top just 13 seconds into the
contest, the Lady Bobcats battled back with two consecutive goals
to take a short-lived lead four minutes into the contest. Both
goals were scored by freshman Desiree Cox (Hendersonville, TN) who
ended up scoring the Lady Bobcats other three as well to establish
her career game high at five goals just three games into her
collegiate career. Cox leads the Lady Bobcats in scoring with ten
goals in three games.
Mercyhurst outshot Lees-McRae 47-11, including 28-6 in the first
half. The Lakers also held a 34-26 edge in ground balls and won
18-of-32 draw controls.
The Lady Bobcats will resume Conference Carolinas play this
weekend when they travel to Belmont Abbey College Sunday
afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
