Mars Hill, NC--The Lees-McRae women's softball team knew they
had a challenge ahead of them when they headed to Mars Hill, NC to
take on the 18-3 Mars Hill College Lions Sunday afternoon. Though
the Lady Bobcats battled to stay in the games they were unable to
score against the Lions and fell 3-0, then 1-0. With the win Mars
Hill improves to 20-3 while the Lady Bobcats fall to 10-8 (1-3
Conference Carolinas).
Game One
In the bottom of the first, pitcher Lauren
Gisler (Peachtree City, GA) faced four batters, allowing two
hits and two runs with no outs before being relieved by freshman Magen
West (Whitney, TX). West, stepping into a tough situation, put
out a nice performance, pitching a full six innings while giving up
only three hits, with one run scoring in the bottom of the fifth.
Lees-McRae also had two errors in the game, one coming in the
fifth.
However, though getting two hits from Nicole
Baxter (Denver, NC) and Paula
Fryar (Clinton, NC), the Lady Bobcats were unable to score
against the pitchers Tiffany Farthing and Paige Brantley and the
Lions errorless defenders and succumbed to Mars Hill 3-0.
Game Two
The Lady Bobcats showed their perseverance and resilience in
game two, holding the Lions scoreless through seven innings.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda
Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC) struck out 11 batters while giving up
four hits in the seven plus inning game.
Offensively the Lady Bobcats put up three hits but were unable
to convert those hits into runs scored. Getting hits in game two
were Dodson, Meagan
Knowles (West Palm Beach, FL), and pinchhitter West.
"We were excited about playing Mars Hill well but disappointed
that our bats didn't come through when we needed them," commented
Coach Kennedy. "A lot of things are coming together for us- we just
need to find the intrinsic motivation to improve at the plate."
The Lady Bobcats will resume play on Friday, March 7 when they
travel to Wise, VA to take on UVA-Wise in non-conference
action.
