BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's
basketball team was defeated by the Barton College Bulldogs 86-64
Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in a Conference Carolinas
game.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 1-15 overall and 1-5 in the
conference, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in
the conference.
The teams traded buckets until the 15 minute mark with the
scored tied at 12 Aaron Suggs hit a field goal to give the Bulldogs
a 14-12 lead.
The Bulldogs would open to lead to 12, 31-19, on a Jo-Jo Velez
field goal with 7:54 left in the half.
But the Bobcats would cut the lead to 5, 34-29 on a Josh Kurtz
(Oak Ridge, N.C.) putback with a minute left. The scored remained
34-29 Barton going into the intermission.
Barton shot 42 percent, 14-33, while the Bobcats only shot 34
percent, 9-26, in the first half.
Lees-McRae came out of the locker rooms and closed the lead to
four, 38-34, with 17:02 showing on clock on a Dairl Scott
(Pfafftown, N.C.) field goal.
But, Barton would open the lead to 11, 49-38 on back-to-back
Greg Mammel threes at the 14 minute mark.
Barton pushed the lead to 67-48 on a Mammel field goal with the
8:35 to play.
The Bobcats could not close the gap in the remaining eight
minutes to get a final score of 86-64.
The Bobcats shot 31 percent, 9-29, in the second half, while the
Bulldogs shot 45 percent, 15-33.
Barton's bench had 28 points compared to 11 points from the
Lees-McRae bench.
Sam Youse (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the Bobcats with 18 points
and Aaron Woodacre (Piney Flats, Tenn.) chipped in 16 points. Kyle
Boardman (Clemmons, N.C.) had 11 points rounding out the Bobcats
who scored in double digits. Dairl Scott grabbed a game high 17
rebounds, and Jesse Hoots (Yadkinville, N.C.) passed out a game
high eight assists.
Mammel led the Bulldogs with 23 points going 7 of 6 from the
floor and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. David King had 15
points. L.J. Dunn had 14 points and team high seven rebounds, and
Suggs had 12 points.
The Bobcats will host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders Wednesday,
January 18th at 7:30 p.m. for their next game.
