BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats used two
second half goals in a minute and a half span to comeback and beat
the Queens University of Charlotte Lady Royals Monday night at Tate
Field in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action.
With the win, the Lady Bobcats improve to 10-6 overall and 7-3
in the conference, while Queens slips to 8-10-1 overall and 6-3-1
in the conference. Lees-McRae sits third in the conference with
one match to play --- top four teams host the first round of the
conference tournament.
Queens struck first in the 18th minute when Kristen Wright took
a long pass behind the Lees-McRae back line. Wright beat the
Lees-McRae one-on-one to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Lees-McRae outshot Queens 8-4 in the first half.
After the intermission, the Lady Bobcats scored four minutes
into the second half. Alison Keith played a pass to Vickie Rich
who laid it off to a cutting Emily Jones. Jones took the shot from
the top of the 18-yard box and beat the Royal keeper high to tie
the match.
One minute and twenty-nine seconds later, Maribeth Novak sent a
perfect cross into the box with her left foot where Tiffany Coleman
waiting to put the ball in the net. The goal gave Lees-McRae the
2-1 win. The goal was Coleman's first of the year.
Lees-McRae had ten second half shots compare to seven for
Queens.
Brittany Bolton had four saves in the win. Queen's Kristen
Kornacki made eight saves in the first half, and Megan Hirschy made
four saves in the second half.
"I am very proud of the way the girls battled back in the second
half," head coach Renee Lopez. "It was inspiring to see how much
the seniors wanted this win. They earned this game in the second
half with ten second half shots."
Lees-McRae will host Milligan College Wednesday at Tate Field
for senior day.
