BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats avenged
their only Conference Carolinas loss of the season with a 3-0
(25-18, 25-16, 25-18) sweep of the Mount Olive College Trojans
Friday night in Williams Gymnasium in women's volleyball
action.
With the win, Lees-McRae improves to 22-5 overall and 13-1 in
the conference, while Mount Olive slips to 12-15 overall and 11-3
in the conference. Lees-McRae now has a two-match lead on the
conference with seven days remaining in the regular season. The
team is enjoying their best record since head coach Jamie Petrik
took over in 2005-2006 season when the team made an appearance in
the NCAA's Sweet Sixteen.
In the first set, the Lady Bobcats took an early 5-3 lead on two
Trojan attack errors and never looked back. They took their
largest of the set when Trisha Reese finished the set with a
service ace to make it 25-18.
In second set, Lees-McRae never trailed jumping out to a 10-7
lead. The Lady Bobcats closed the set on a 15-9 run to win the set
25-16 and take a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans took their only lead of match 1-0 in the third set
before a kill by Whitney Justice and a solo block by Megan Epperson
gave the Lady Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Mount Olive tied the match at
four, but four Mount Olive errors and a kill by Katie-Marie Legg
gave made it 9-4, Lees-McRae. Mount Olive went on a 6-3 run, but
was unable to tie or regain the lead as Lees-McRae finished the
sweep with a 25-18 win.
Lees-McRae was led by Justice, who had nine kills on 16 attempts
with one error for a .444 hitting percentage. Legg followed with
seven kills on 15 attempts with two errors for a .333 hitting
percentage. Megan Mitchell had a match-high 29 assists, and
Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, Luana Rocha, had a
match-high 12 digs. Legg also had a match-high five total blocks,
one solo and four block assists. Justice and Megan Epperson had
four totals blocks, as Lees-McRae controlled the net with ten and a
half team blocks, 17 block assists and two solo blocks.
Christiane Maul paced Mount Olive with nine kills on 15 attempts
with three errors for a .400 hitting percentage. Alicia Mote and
Racey Bartley followed with eight and seven kills respectively.
Joanie Werling handed out 24 assists, and Mote led the team with
seven digs. Kailey Preece had three total blocks, one solo and two
block assists to lead Mount Olive. As a team, the Trojans only had
five blocks.
Lees-McRae will host Barton on Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday will
also be Senior Day for Lees-McRae's three seniors: Legg, Lauren
Dickover and Trisha Reese.
