BANNER ELK, N.C. - Whitney Justice, the 2009 Conference
Carolinas All-Tournament MVP, had 13 kills and a .444 hitting
percentage to lead the Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats to a 3-0
(25-19, 25-23, 25-14) win over the Limestone College Lady Saints to
earn the Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Tournament
Championship Sunday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium.
With the win, Lees-McRae improves to 29-5 overall and wins their
tenth conference tournament title in the past eleven years. The
Lady Bobcats will also advance to the 2009 NCAA Tournament's
Southeast Regional, which will be hosted by Wingate University
Thursday. Limestone's season ends with a 21-15 overall record and
finished second in the conference tournament for the second time in
three years.
In the first set, Lees-McRae ran out to a 10-3 lead aided by
three Justine Congdon kills and two kills from Justice, but
Limestone would fight back and close the lead to 22-17 on a Lady
Bobcats service error. After a Lees-McRae timeout, the Bobcats
would end the match at 25-19 on a Megan Epperson kill.
The second set saw a tight match before Limestone took a 15-12
lead on a kill by Melissa Thomas, and Limestone extended their lead
to 20-15. Justice sparked the Lees-McRae comeback with a kill to
cut the lead to 20-16. The Lady Bobcats tied the match at 21 on a
kill by Katie-Marie Legg. With the match tied at 23 Legg and
Taylor Clendenin had back-to-back kills to win the second set
25-23.
Lees-McRae took an early 11-4 third set lead and scored the
final five points of the set to win the match and 25-14.
Justice's match high 13 kills and .444 hitting percentage paced
the Lady Bobcats. Clendenin, Legg and Epperson added six kills
apiece. Megan Mitchell had a match high 30 assists, and Luana
Rocha had 13 digs. Legg had a team-high three total blocks, one
solo block and two block assists.
Melissa Thomas led the Lady Saints with eight kills, and Brooke
England had a match-high 15 digs. Luara Kerrison had two service
aces and 12 assists, and Holi Dawson had four total blocks, all
four were block assists.
Joining Justice on the All-Tournament Team was, Anderson's Jamie
Lancaster, Pfeiffer's Abbie Ovbey, Limestone's Thomas and England
and Lees-McRae's Trisha Reese and Rocha.
