JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Freshman guard Daniel Sepokas scored a
team-high 11 points for the Lees-McRae College Bobcats, but it
wasn't enough as the Carson-Newman College Eagles won 76-57
Wednesday afternoon in a nonconference men's basketball game.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-5 on the season, while the
Bobcats fall to 1-7.
Sepokas' 11 points came on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor, and
he hit two of his three three-point attempts. Stephen Haymer
tossed in 10 points and was the only other Bobcat in double
figures. Haymer also grabbed a team-high six rebounds and had
three steals.
Darron Maxtion tallied a game-high 23 points and Collin Crane
netted 13 points to lead the Carson-Newman. Maxtion was 10-of-12
from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Eagles.
Brandon Evans was a force in the paint with seven points, 10
rebounds and five blocked shots.
C-N shot 53.4 percent (31-of-58) for the game, including 47.4
percent (9-of-19) from 3-point range. Lees-McRae connected on just
32.8 percent (20-of-61) of its shots.
The Eagles held a 43-38 lead at the break after Michael Nicolo
beat the buzzer with a layup.
C-N stepped up its defensive pressure in the second half,
holding the Bobcats to 19 points. The Eagles went on an 18-7 run to
build a 61-45 lead on a layup by Maxtion with 7:15 left in the
contest.
The Eagles never allowed Lees-McRae to trim their lead below 12
points and led by as many as 20 points late in the half.
C-N held the Bobcats to just 20 percent (5-of-25) shooting
during the final 20 minutes.
The Bobcats will return to action Monday, January 4th in
Williams Gymnasium with a return to Conference Carolinas action
against Anderson.
