LAURINBURG, N.C.-Despite taking a 28-25 halftime lead the
Lees-McRae College Bobcats lost to the St. Andrews Presbyterian
Knights 74-67 Saturday afternoon in men's basketball action.
The Bobcats (0-4 Overall; 0-2 Conf.) led 28-25 at halftime but
St. Andrews' Andrew Garst scored 14 of his 20 points and pulled
down nine of his 14 rebounds in the second half as the Knights
(3-3; 1-1) secured their second straight win.
Lees-McRae held its last lead at 43-42 on a lay-up by junior
Jesse Hoots but St. Andrews strung together the next seven points
in a little over a minute to take a 49-43 advantage at the midway
point of the second half.
The Bobcats kept clawing and Daniel Sepokas made three-pointer
that tied the game for the fourth and final time, 50-50, with 7:41
on the clock.
St. Andrews scored the next five points including a lay-up by
Garst and a 12-foot jumper in the lane by Moffitt to pull ahead for
the rest of the contest. Christian converted on 9-of-10 free throws
in the final four minutes to preserve the seven-point victory.
The Knights dominated the post play with a +16 (45-29)
rebounding advantage. St. Andrews outscored Lees-McRae, 40-24, in
the paint and had a 20-8 gain on second effort points with a
season-high 19 offensive rebounds.
The two teams played a close first half that featured three ties
and three lead changes. Both teams were unable to take more than a
five-point lead in the opening period before Lees-McRae held a
three-point advantage at halftime.
Sophomore Sam Youse led the Bobcats with 17 points including a
game-high three 3-pointers. The junior duo of Hoots and Jeremy
Helms each poured in ten points for the visitors, while classmate
Adam McFerran contributed with eight points and a team-high six
rebounds. Hoots dished out five assists.
SAPC shot 42.4% (25-of-59) from the field but only 26.7%
(4-of-15) from behind the arc while LMC fired at 41.4% (24-of-58)
precision from the field and 36.8%(7-of-19) from long range.
Lees-McRae travels to Southeast Region foe Brevard College on
Monday at 7 p.m.
