BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team
extended its match win streak to seven with wins over Eastern
Mennonite, 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-22), and Mount Olive College, 3-0
(30-28, 30-26, 32-30) on day two of the Lees-McRae/King College
Invitation Tournament Saturday.
In the first match, the team traveled to King College and defeated
Eastern Mennonite easily in three sets.
Colin Kelly led the team with 13 kills on 28 attempts. Ryan Black
and Chad Mercado added seven kills. Mercado also led the team with
nine digs. Jeff Black led the team with three total blocks, and
Juan Ramirez handed out 38 assists. Kelly and Robert Ritchie had
two service aces for the Bobcats.
In the second match against Mount Olive back in the friendly
confines of Williams Gymnasium the team rallied to come from behind
to win sets one and three, while leading the entire time in set
two.
In set one, the Bobcats rallied from down 17-11 to post a 30-28
win.
Set two was a similar story with the team coming back from a 24-20
deficit to win 32-30. Facing set point, 30-29, Jeff Black had a
monster kill to tie the match. Following a Mount Olive attack
error, Ritchie ended the set and the match with a solo block to
seal the 32-30 win.
Kelly led the Bobcats again with 14 kills on 28 attempts. Mercado
pitched in with 12 kills on 22 attempts with only three errors for
a .409 hitting percentage. Ramirez passed out 41 assists and
picked up ten digs. The Black brothers, Jeff and Ryan, each had
one service ace. Ritchie and Ryan Black led the team with three
and a half total blocks.
The Bobcats look to continue their winning ways as they travel to
Mount Olive for the Mount Olive Tournament Saturday, February 28th
to play Eastern Mennonite and York.
