BANNER ELK, N.C. - Brandon Wright scored 36 of the Erskine
College Flying Fleet's 67 points as they defeated the Lees-McRae
College Bobcats 67-59 Tuesday night in Williams Gymnasium in
Conference Carolinas action.
Kyle Boardman led the way for Lees-McRae with 18 points and eight
rebounds. Aaron Woodacre chipped in 16 points.
Wright outscored the remaining nine players for the Flying Fleet by
five points, 36-31. Nathan Jones was the only other Erskine player
in double digits with 10 points.
Boardman tied the game at 14-14 six minutes into the game, but a
Jay Boulware three would give Erskine a 17-14 lead.
With the Flying Fleet leading by six, 21-15, the Bobcats sparked an
8-0 run to take a 23-21 lead capped off by a Jesse Hoots field goal
with 6:44 remaining in the half.
In the remaining six minutes the two teams traded the lead twice,
and Erskine held the lead before a Sean Hardin putback would tie
the game at 30 heading into the locker rooms.
After the break, Wright scored eight points in two minutes to give
the Flying Fleet an 8-0 run and take a 38-30 lead and control of
the game.
The Bobcats were able to cut the lead to four over the second half,
but Wright would always have an answer, including seven of the last
nine points for Erskine to give them the 67-59 win.
Thirty of Erskine's 67 points came from behind the arc including 18
for Wright, while Lees-McRae only had 18 points from three.
Erskine finished the game going 50 percent from the floor and 52
percent from three, while Lees-McRae was only 39 percent overall
and 27 percent from behind the arc.
Lees-McRae will await their fate in the first round of the
2008-2009 Conference Carolinas Tournament. First round action
starts Saturday, February 28th.
