RALEIGH, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats softball
team won their season opening doubleheader against the Meredith
College Avenging Angels 13-5 and 14-4 Friday afternoon in
nonconference action.
Junior Amanda Dodson had an outstanding day for the Lady
Bobcats. From the circle she threw five innings, appearing in both
games. She yielded four hits and gave up no runs while recording
five strikeouts earning herself a win and a save. At the plate,
she was 2-for-6 on the day with three runs scored, four RBI and a
homerun.
In game one Meredith got on the scoreboard first when Arielle Stout
doubled to center plating Jordan Smith. Stout scored when Patricia
Davis homered to give the Avenging Angels a 3-0 lead.
Ashley Benfield led off the third inning with a walk and then stole
second. Dodson moved her to third to set her up to score on a wild
pitch to get the Lady Bobcats on the scoreboard, 3-1.
In the fourth inning Lees-McRae took advantage of five walks to
score six runs and take a 7-3 lead. Dodson provided a RBI single
in the inning.
Meredith would answer, however, in the bottom of the fourth inning
on two RBI singles by Toni Tricarico and Jordan Zachmeyer to cut
the lead to 7-5.
Lees-McRae took control of the game in the top of fifth inning with
another six run inning. The inning was highlighted by a Nicole
Baxter solo homerun and a Dodson three-run blast to make it 13-5
and give the game its final score.
Magen West earned the win for the Lady Bobcats in three and a third
innings worked. Jordan Smith was saddled with the loss for the
Avenging Angels in five innings.
Dodson went 2-for-4 with four RBI in the game and led the Lady
Bobcat offense.
The Lees-McRae offense started right where it left off in game
two with a three run top of the first inning highlighted by an Anna
Carter RBI double.
Meredith took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a
Smith RBI single and a Stout three-run blast to make it 4-3.
Lees-McRae tied the game at four in the top of the third inning
when a West single drove in Paula Fryar with a single.
The Lady Bobcats pushed two runs across in the fourth inning on
four walks and a single, but broke the game open in the fifth
inning with five unearned runs to take a 11-4 lead. Carter's two
run double highlighted the inning.
Lees-McRae tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth on
three singles to end the game at 14-4.
Dodson picked up the win for Lees-McRae in three and a third
innings of relief work where she only allowed two hits from 12
batters faced. Stout took the loss for Meredith.
Fryar led the Lady Bobcats' offense by going 3-for-3 with four runs
scored and two RBI. Carter followed by going 3-for-4 with four RBI
and two runs scored.
Lees-McRae will take the diamond again Saturday, February 7th for a
doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. at Chowan University.
