MARS HILL, N.C. - The No. 8 Mars Hill College Lions defeated the
Lees-McRae College Bobcats, 12-8 in non-conference men's lacrosse
action at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium
Wednesday afternoon, despite Andy Nesdill recording a career high
25 saves and Matt Smith earning his first collegiate goals.
Mars Hill College remains undefeated at 5-0, while Lees-McRae
falls to 0-4 on the season.
David Hodgins and Danny Farmer led Mars Hill scoring four goals
apiece. Danny Farmer added two assists in the win. Cade Zulak added
two scores while Tyler Farmer provided the team with a a pair of
assists. Nick Sigona played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions
and made 11 saves.
Smith came off the bench to pace the Bobcats with three goals while
Danny Ives scored two goals and added one assist in the loss.
Smith's first goal came with 7:49 remaining in the second period
for his first career goal. Derin Vacca recorded one goal and an
assist in the contest for the Bobcats.
Nesdill played extremely well for Lees-McRae making 25 saves and
facing 51 shots. Nesdill's 25 saves is a new career high. This is
back-to-back career high saves games and back-to-back 20 plus saves
for Nesdil between the pipes.
After trading goals during the first 12 minutes of play, Zulak
scored on an assist from Danny Farmer with 2:49 left in the first
quarter and the Lions would never trail gain.
Mars Hill outscored Lees-McRae 4-1 in the opening frame and 3-1 in
the second stanza to take a 7-2 advantage into the locker room at
the intermission.
The Lions won the third period outscoring the Bobcats 4-2 before
Lees-McRae won the fourth quarter outscoring the Lions, 4-1 to make
the final tally, 12-8 in favor of Mars Hill.
Mars Hill outshot the Bobcats, 51-27 and won the ground ball
battle, 44-32.
The Lions dominated face-offs winning 20-of-22 attempts.
Mars Hill was 3-for-5 on extra man opportunities, while Lees-McRae
went 0-4.
