LAURINBURG, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's softball team
split a conference doubleheader, 3-0 and 1-7, with St. Andrews
Presbyterian College Monday afternoon to improve to 16-12 overall
and 4-4 in the conference.
In game one, Amanda Dodson tossed a complete-game shutout for the
Lady Bobcats to earn the win. She gave up only three hits and
recorded five strikeouts to improve to 9-3 on the season.
With the game scoreless in the top of the seventh, Anna Carter
singled to left field to start off the inning. Pinch runner Amanda
Leonard was sacrificed to second and scored on a throwing error
when Katie Alexander hit a fielder's choice to score the
game-winning run.
The Lady Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the inning when Meagan
Knowles and Veronica Ollier singled to load the bases. Dodson
reached on an error that scored Kim Coley, who pinch ran for
Alexander, and Knowles to make it 3-0.
Dodson retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh
on strikeouts and got the final out to ground out to third to end
the game.
St. Andrews starter Ashley Disque was saddled with the loss despite
not allowing an earned run.
Five different Lady Bobcats collected a hit during the game.
In game two, St. Andrews scored first in the first inning on a
Danyell Marquez RBI double to take a 1-0 lead, and they extended
the lead to 2-0 in the third inning on a Jasmine Dobbin solo
homerun.
Lees-McRae cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the
sixth on a RBI single by Nicole Baxter.
But, St. Andrews pulled away with five runs in the bottom half of
the sixth on five hits and an error to make it 7-1. The highlight
of the inning was an RBI double by Sarah Applegarth.
Magen West took the loss for Lees-McRae in the circle, while
Applegarth earned the win for St. Andrews going the distance for
the Lady Knights.
Dodson was 2-for-3 from the batter's box, and Nicole Baxter also
collected two hits in three plate appearances and drove in the
team's only run of the game.
Lees-McRae will host Conference Carolinas opponent Pfeiffer
University April 1st at 3:00 p.m. for their next doubleheader.
