ANDERSON, S.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats softball
team used a doubleheader sweep, 5-4 and 4-3, of the Anderson
University Lady Trojans Thursday afternoon to take the top spot in
the Conference Carolinas with 10-6 overall record and 3-1 record in
the conference.
In game one, the Lady Bobcats got on the scoreboard first in the
second inning when Magen West hit a solo homerun to make it
1-0.
Lees-McRae extended its lead in the fifth innining when Amanda
Leonard and Heather Collison reached on Anderson errors. Kim Coley
had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly that scored Leonard, and Veronica
Ollier followed by knocking in Collison with an RBI double. Paula
Fryar doubled to score Ollier to give the Lady Bobcats a 4-0
lead.
Anderson finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with one
and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to
send the game into extra innings.
Lees-McRae wasted no time in taking the lead in the eighth inning.
With Meagan Knowles on second because of the international
tiebreaker rules for softball, West led off with a walk and Leonard
reached on an error scoring Knowles for the win.
Dodson, who bailed the Lady Bobcats out of trouble in the seventh,
held the Lady Trojans to earn the 4-3 win in the circle. West, who
started the game, didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. She
also recorded nine strikeouts.
West led the Lady Bobcat offense with her solo homerun, and Ollier
reached base twice in four plate appearances.
In game two, the Lady Bobcats struck first with a two-run first
inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ollier led off the game with a single,
stole second and scored on a Dodson two-run homer.
Lees-McRae added to their lead with in the second inning when Kim
Coley singled and reached second on a Knowles sacrifice bunt.
Leonard then reached on an error, and Anna Carter drove in two runs
with her double to extend the lead to 4-0.
Anderson scratched across two runs in the second inning highlighted
by a solo homerun and cut the lead to 4-3 in the third inning on
two hits that scored one run.
The Lady Trojans couldn't complete the comeback as Dodson earned
her second win of the day with a complete game performance. She
allowed just six hits and recorded eight strikeouts.
Dodson, Fryar, Coley and Paige Coleman were 1-for-3 at the plate
for the Lady Bobcats.
Lees-McRae will travel to Titusville, Fla. for the Cocoa Expo
Tournament at Chain of Lakes Park for back-to-back games against
Cedarville University and Ursuline College starting at 3:00 p.m.
