BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats women's
volleyball team suffered their first loss, 3-1 (24-26, 20-25,
25-23, 19-25) of the 2009 season at the hands of the Lincoln
Memorial Lady Railsplitters on day one of the Carolina Challenge in
Williams Gymnasium.
In set one, neither team could pull away.
The largest led of the set came on a Katie-Marie Legg kill to give
the Lady Bobcats a 9-6 lead, but the Lady Railsplitters would pull
out the win, 26-24, on kills by Amanda Horenkamp and Ashley
Knight.
Lincoln Memorial held an early lead in
set two, but the Bobcats regained control on three Lady
Railsplitters' miscues and a service ace by Justine Congdon to take
a 17-14 lead. Lincoln Memorial rallied back
to tie the match at 18 on a kill by Kodi Cartwright. Lincoln Memorial went on to win seven of the last eight
points to earn the 25-20 win.
Set three saw the Lady Bobcats jump to a
five-point lead twice. Lincoln Memorial was
able to get within one point, 19-18, but Lees-McRae pulled away
with the set three win, 25-23.
Lincoln Memorial slammed the accelerator
down in the fourth set jumping out to an 11-3 lead. They never
looked back and went on to win the set 25-19 to seal the
match.
Megan Epperson led the Lady Bobcat's
attack with 16 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Megan Mitchell handed out 34 assists and had four
service aces. Luana Rocha paced the team
with 21 digs.
Lincoln Memorial placed three hitters in
double digit kills during the match.
Horenkamp and Alison Hess had 11 kills apiece, while Candace
Richardson followed with ten. Lauren Kiwacka
had 31 assists. Horenkamp also led the team
with 18 digs.
"It was a battle on the court,"
head Bobcat coach Jamie Petrik said. "Give
credit to Lincoln Memorial. I thought we did
some good things defensively, but they were much more efficient
with their hitting."
