BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Abby White (Madisonville,
Tenn.) netted her second goal of the season, and added an assist on
senior day as the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team cruised to
an 8-1 win over Coker College in Conference Carolinas play.
MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) added three goals and two
assists in the victory to pace the Lady Bobcats (13-5, 8-2 CC),
while Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.) added two scores to
make senior day memorable for LMC's four seniors. Katelyn Custer
(Mooresville, N.C.) and Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.)
also added a goal and assist each for Lees-McRae, which outshot the
Cobras (1-14-1, 1-8-1 CC) by a 25-3 margin, including a 12-1
advantage in the first half.
Prior to the contest, the Lady Bobcats honored four seniors for
their time and dedication to the program. White, Brittany Bolton
(Roanoke, Va.), Aleeshia Fisher (Lenoir, N.C.), and Caitlin Smith
(Spartanburg, S.C.) were honored in a short ceremony to open
festivities. During the ceremony, each senior was presented with a
framed jersey and flowers to commemorate their time at
Lees-McRae.
The contest opened with a flurry of activity as the Lady Bobcats
rocked the Coker defense back on their heels with a relentless
attack. Early in the 12th minute, Sullivan placed a Custer offering
into the far netting to open a 1-0 lead for LMC. At the 19:00
minute mark, Sullivan added her second score of the day, extending
the lead to 2-0, when Emily Jones (Leonardtown, Md.) fed a cross
into the left side of the box for the far-side finish.
The Cobras netted their lone goal of the contest in the 23rd
minute when Sarah Kinsey (Windermere, Fla.) netted a sliding shot
from the top of the box to slice the margin to 2-1.
Rich netted her first score of the contest in the 28th minute to
extend the advantage to 3-1, placing a Jones helper off the near
post into the far side of the goal. Rich tallied her tenth goal of
the season and second of the contest late in the 47th minute,
touching a ball past the keeper to make it 4-1. Custer and Kerrigan
added goals in the 60th and 61st minute to push the advantage to
6-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
Sullivan completed the hat-trick in the 63rd minute when Rich
returned the favor, leading Sullivan into the box for the finish
into the nearside netting. White capped the day's scoring in the
70th minute, volleying a Monica Young (Supply, N.C.) cross over the
keeper to equal the final margin of 8-1.
Bolton finished the day with two stops on three shots from the
Cobra attackers, while Carrie Hudnell (Goose Creek, S.C.) stopped
14 shots on goal for Coker.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Monday when the Lady Bobcats
host Mount Olive College in opening round action of the 2010
Conference Carolinas Tournament. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m.
kickoff at Tate Field.
