BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Sophomore setter Megan
Mitchell (Minden, Nevada) recorded a match-high 35 assists,
including her 1,000th helper of the season, and a trio of Lady
Bobcats posted double-digits in kills to lead the Lees-McRae
College women's volleyball team to a straight-set sweep of Pfeiffer
University in Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday night.
Lees-McRae (20-7, 16-0 CC) won the match by scores of 25-14,
25-15, and 25-17 to extend its conference winning streak to 29
consecutive contests, and notch its second straight 20-win season.
The Lady Bobcats posted a.295 hitting percentage on the night,
while holding Pfeiffer (10-15, 9-7 CC) to a 0.13 clip on the
attack. Lees-McRae also recorded eight service aces, while Pfeiffer
notched nine blocks as a team.
Megan Epperson (St. John, Ind.) posted a double-double with 10
digs and a match-high 12 kills, while Taylor Clendenin
(Statesville, N.C.) tallied a double-double of her own with 11
kills and 11 digs. Whitney Justice (Connelly Springs, N.C.) chipped
in 10 kills of her own, posting a blistering .667 hitting
percentage, as Dana Oliver (Davie, Fla.) notched a match-high 14
digs. Chloe Casas (Plano, Texas) also posted a match-high three
service aces, while freshman Lauren Fox (Garland, Texas) chipped in
five blocks.
Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) tallied four kills for Pfeiffer,
while Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, N.C.), Kim Amerell (Lynchburg,
Va.), and Kristina Mordini (Freeport, Ill.) each posted three
kills. Kaci Markham (Asheboro, N.C.) paced the Falcons with 13
digs, while Colleen Wands (Apex, N.C.) chipped in 15 assists.
Ovbey, Amerell, and Kathryn Hobson (Asheboro, N.C.) each tallied
three blocks for Pfeiffer.
Lees-McRae started strong, jumping out to an early 5-1 lead in
the first set before Taylor Stice (Franklin, Tenn.) smashing in a
kill to push the margin to 11-4 on the heels of a 5-0 run. The Lady
Bobcats would widen the advantage to 21-11 with a 10-7 run, before
Clendenin closed out the 25-14 first-set win with her fourth kill
of the frame.
Pfeiffer battled to an early 11-9 lead in the second set,
launching a 3-0 spurt with the Lady Bobcats holding a slim 9-8
margin to gain the advantage on a kill by O'Bryant. Lees-McRae
responded with a 4-0 run, taking a 13-11 lead on a Pfeiffer attack
error. The Lady Bobcats would continue to dictate the flow of play,
pushing the margin to 22-13 with a 9-2 run, which was capped by a
kill from Fox. Lees-McRae would tally three of the final five
points in the set to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match on a
block by Stice and Fox.
The third set opened with neither team gaining more than a
two-point advantage, until LMC went on a 3-0 spurt with the score
tied at 6-6 to take an early 9-6 lead. Pfeiffer would rally,
evening the score at 11-11 with a kill from Ovbey on the heels of a
5-2 run. The highlight moment of the match would come two points
later, when Mitchell set up a kill by Justice to notch her 1,000th
assist of the season.
Lees-McRae would post the next three points in the set, taking a
16-11 lead on a service ace by Casas, before the Falcons closed the
gap to 20-17 with a 6-4 spurt of their own. The Lady Bobcats would
answer, closing out the set and the match with a 5-0 run that was
capped by a block from Stice and Fox.
The Lady Bobcats return to the court on Friday when they travel
to Mount Olive, N.C. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Mount Olive College
in conference action.
