BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team
fell to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals, 86-72, Monday
night in a Conference Carolinas men's basketball game.
The Bobcats had three scorers in double-digits Sam Youse had a
team-high 14 points and six rebounds. Daniel Sepokas followed with
13 points, and Jesse Hoots added 11 points and three assists. Adam
McFerran also grabbed six rebounds for the Bobcats.
For the Royals, Reggie Hopkins notched 15 points, and Antonio
Stabler had ten points. Daniel Bailey grabbed a team-high four
rebounds.
The game started with the two teams trading the lead for the
first eight minutes of the game. During that time there were five
ties and two lead changes. Queens would take the lead for good
when Nate Blackburn drained a three to give the Royals a 14-12
advantage with 10:50 to play.
The Royals would build a six-point lead on a Hopkins steal and
layup, but Lees-McRae would cut the lead down to one, 19-18, on a
Youse layup with 5:30 remaining in the half.
Queens would push the lead to six, 24-18, but Lees-McRae rallied
again cutting the lead to one, 24-23, before the Royals would take
a seven point lead, 33-26, with just over a minute to play.
Hoots would make the final basket of the half to cut the lead to
35-31.
In the first half, the Bobcats were 46 percent from the floor
and 37 percent from three, while the Royals were 48 percent overall
and 42 percent from three. Queens was 85 percent from the charity
strip, while Lees-McRae went 44 percent from the line.
Lees-McRae would cut the lead to three immediately following the
break on a McFerran free throw, but Queens pushed the lead to
double-digits, 50-39, on two Andre Lockheart free throws at the
14:10 mark.
Less than three minutes later, the lead was 17, 56-39, following
a Daniel Bailey three-point play. Lees-McRae cut the lead to nine
with a Jeremy Helms three with 11:22 to play, but the Royals went
on a 10-4 run to take a 17 point lead, 68-51 with 7:13
remaining.
Three minutes later following two Dairl Scott free throws
Lees-McRae cut the lead down to eight, 70-62, but a three by
Hopkins and free throws by Lockhart and Stabler gave the Royals a
77-62 lead and closed the door on the Bobcats with 3:12 to
play.
Queens would hold on and win 86-72 to improve to 12-13 overall
and 9-9 in the conference, while the Bobcats fall to 3-22 overall
and 2-16 in the conference.
In the second half, Lees-McRae was 40 percent from the field and
18 percent from three, while the Royals ignited by going 55 percent
overall and 50 percent from three in the half.
Queens scored 26 points off of 12 Lees-McRae turnovers, while
Lees-McRae notched 18 points off of nine Royals' turnovers.
Lees-McRae will travel to Anderson for their next game Wednesday
before returning to Williams Gymnasium on Saturday when they host
Belmont Abbey for Senior Day.
