BANNER ELK, N.C. - Chad Mercado had 20 kills to lead the
Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team to a 3-2 (30-24, 30-27,
24-30, 24-30, 15-11) win over the King College Tornado in first
Conference Carolinas men's volleyball match in Williams
Gymnasium.
Mercado's 20 kills was a match-high and tied a season-high for
the junior. Raphael Vieira followed with 14 kills, and Edmund
Walkley and Steven Bunning had 11 and ten kills respectively.
Walkley led the Bobcats with .350 hitting percentage and four total
blocks.. Juan Ramirez passed out 48 assists and collected 13
digs. Kyle Gauger had a match-high 15 digs, and Justy Tevid had 13
digs.
For the Tornado, Michael Koebel had 13 kills followed by Ariel
Apolinario, who had 12 kills. James Friddle notched 11 kills and
had match-high .588 hitting percentage. Brandon Rorer, who had ten
kills, was the final Tornado with double-digit kills. Joel Salva
had 52 assists and 11 digs, and Cephas Morris added ten digs for
King.
Lees-McRae took an early lead with a 30-24 set one win and a
30-27 set two win, but King would take sets three and four 30-24 to
set up for a fifth set. In the fifth set, the Bobcats took an
early 8-2 lead before the Tornado cut the lead to 13-11, but
Lees-McRae would earn the final two points to earn the win.
Lees-McRae will return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. against
Limestone College then again at 2 p.m. against Eastern
Mennonite.
