BRISTOL, Tenn. --- Brooke Santerre (Port
Republic, Md.) scored a pair of goals and added a late assist to
lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory
over King College on Wednesday afternoon.
Lees-McRae outshot the Tornado by a 20-2 margin on the
afternoon, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half. Santerre
paced the Lady Bobcats with her first two goals of the season,
including a penalty kick early in the second half. Freshman
MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) added a goal and an assist for
the Lady Bobcats, while Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and
Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) added a goal and a helper,
respectively.
The match started with a flurry of goals, with three tallies
coming in the first eight minutes of the contest. Lees-McRae opened
the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, taking an early
1-0 lead just 1:53 into the match when Kerrigan set up Sullivan for
her second goal of the season. King evened the score at 1-1 early
in the fifth minute on a goal by Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga,
Tenn.) off a pass from Hannah Shankle (Bristol, Va.).
Santerre responded with her first goal of the match in the
opening moments of the eighth minute, taking a pass from Sullivan
and delivering a well-placed finish past the keeper to put the Lady
Bobcats up 2-1 heading into the interval.
Lees-McRae would stretch the lead to 3-1 midway through the 56th
minute when Santerre converted a penalty kick for her second goal
of the season. Rich added the final tally of the afternoon in the
closing seconds of the 59th minute off a cross from Santerre to
widen the margin to 4-1.
The Lady Bobcats return to the pitch on Saturday when LMC
travels to Wilson, N.C. for a 5 p.m. matchup with Barton College to
resume its Conference Carolinas schedule.
