BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Flagler College men's
soccer team scored early in the first half, and withstood a furious
rally from the second-ranked Bobcats en route to a 3-0
season-opening victory on the first night of the Michael Shope
Memorial Tournament on Friday at Tate Field. Flagler improves to
1-0 on the season while Lees-McRae drops to 0-1.
Mack Hough opened the scoring for Flagler early in the eighth
minute, taking a long throw-in from Will Frandsen and slotted the
finish past the LMC keeper to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead.
Conor Killeen added a goal midway through the 16th minute to push
the lead to 2-0 going into the interval, and drove home his second
of the match in the 78th minute to equal the final margin of
3-0.
Lees-McRae battled hard throughout the match, catching several
unlucky breaks on numerous quality scoring chances while
out-shooting the Saints by an 18-14 margin. The Bobcats launched a
relentless rally in the second half, recording a 14-8 advantage in
shots, with 10 of those attempts coming in the final 30
minutes.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Sunday when they square off
against Tusculum College at 2 p.m. in the final match of the
Michael Shope Memorial Tournament at Tate Field.
