BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Vickie Rich (Arlington
Heights, Ill.) and Jessica O'Leary (Millbury, Mass.) each recorded
a goal and an assist to lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer
team to a 3-1 victory over Mars Hill College on Wednesday night at
Tate Field.
Lees-McRae (2-1) controlled the run of play for much of the
match, out-shooting the Lions (1-1) by a margin of 24-13, including
a 12-4 advantage in the second half. Rich, O'Leary, and Emily Jones
(Leonardtown, Md.) each found the back of the net for the Lady
Bobcats, as Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) joined Rich and
O'Leary with one assist each. Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.) scored the
lone goal for the Lions, an unassisted strike early in the first
half.
Jones opened the scoring in the closing moments of the eighth
minute, delivering a perfect strike into the back of the net off a
corner from Kerrigan. Martin put the Lions back on terms early in
the 10th minute, taking advantage of a giveaway by the LMC backline
and slotting the ball inside the far post to even the score at
1-1.
Rich broke the deadlock midway through the 44th minute,
delivering a wonderful finish inside the far post off a perfectly
placed lead pass from O'Leary to put the Lady Bobcats up 2-1
heading into the interval. O'Leary added an insurance goal early in
the second half, netting her second goal of the season late in the
50th minute off a perfect lay off by Rich to put Lees-McRae up
3-1.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Lady
Bobcats host Limestone College to open their Conference Carolinas
schedule. The match is slated to kickoff at 4:30 p.m. at Tate
Field.
