HARROGATE, Tenn. --- Desmond Johnson (Lynch,
Ky.) and D'Mario Curry (Detroit, Mich.) each recorded a
double-double to lead the No. 17 Lincoln Memorial University men's
basketball team to a 100-62 victory over visiting Lees-McRae
College on Monday night in a non-conference matchup.
Lincoln Memorial (10-0) knocked down 52.9 percent of its
attempts from the floor on the night, including a 57.6 percent clip
in the first half, while holding Lees-McRae (3-6) to a 37.3 percent
mark from the field. The Railsplitters won the battle on the glass
by a decisive 52-31 margin, including a 33-18 advantage on the
defensive glass, while converting 15 Bobcat turnovers into 21
points.
Adam McFerran (Stow, Ohio) paced the Bobcats with 19 points on
6-of-13 shooting, while Tevin Friday (Gastonia, N.C.) and Dairl
Scott, Jr. (Pfafftown, N.C.) chipped in 10 and nine markers,
respectively. Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) and Reshon
Benjamin (Valdosta, Ga.) paced LMC with three assists each, while
Sepokas and McFerran each pulled down a team-high five
rebounds.
Curry poured in a game-high 25 points off the bench, connecting
on 9-of-15 attempts from the floor and going 7-for-10 at the free
throw line, while pulling down 12 rebounds to post a double-double.
Johnson recorded a double-double of his own with 22 points and a
game-high 13 rebounds, connecting on 9-of-14 attempts from the
floor and 4-of-8 at the charity stripe. Brandon Armstrong (Decatur,
Ga.) also scored in double figures with 11 points, while Carlos
Sanford (Durham, N.C.) dished out a game-high five assists. Curry
also chipped in a game-high four blocked shots.
The game began with neither team being able to gain more than a
two-point advantage over the opening five minutes until, with the
score knotted at 10-10, Lincoln Memorial launched a 15-6 run over
the next five minutes to take a 25-16 lead on a Justin Allen
(Lithonia, Ga.) triple with 9:53 remaining in the half.
Lees-McRae would trim the margin to 26-20 with a 4-1 spurt
before the Railsplitter offense took control, countering with an
11-3 run over the next two minutes to push the lead to 37-23 with
6:26 to play in the period. The Railsplitters then closed out the
half with a 17-11 run to take a 54-34 advantage into the
intermission.
The Lincoln Memorial offense continued to dictate the tempo
early in the second half, opening the period with a 13-3 run to
push the margin to 67-37 on a three-point play by Curry with 15:50
to play. Lees-McRae would answer with a quick 5-0 spurt to trim the
lead to 67-42 before the Railsplitters regained control, pushing
the lead to 80-42 with a 13-0 run, which was capped by a Curry dunk
with 11:04 to play.
Lincoln Memorial would maintain the 30-point margin for the
remainder of the game, pushing the lead to as much as 39 points
(86-47) en route to the 100-62 victory, running its season-opening
win streak to 10 games in the process.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Thursday when the Bobcats
host Queens University of Charlotte to resume their Conference
Carolinas schedule. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Williams
Gymnasium.
